cave canem

This mosaic can be seen on the floor in the entrance to the House of the Tragic Poet, which is filled with mosaics.  It is located across the street from the Forum Baths. The Latin inscription Cave Canem can be translated to, "Beware of the Dog."

It is estimated that this mosaic was created some time during the late first century AD. It was uncovered during an excavation about 200 years ago after the ancient Roman city Pompeii was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
